The Golden Age of Norwegian Photography

Norwegian fine art photography in the 1970`s and1980`s

In 1999 The Norwegian Assosiation of Fine Art Photographers celebrated their 25th anniversary. Last year it was the turn of the Fotogalleriet. However none of these anniversary celebrations focused on the first generation of photographers in this period. Norsk Museum For Fotografi- Preus fotomuseum has taken on the challenge, and is in this summmers exhibition presenting a small selection of the more than 280 photographer who were presented at the annual Spring exhibitions, and a variety of other exhibitions between 1971 and 1989.

No changes follow the calender, but the development that led to a growing creative environment among artists working with cameraes, began when Kåre Kivijarvi presented a set of photographs entitled ”Vandringer I-III” , and became the first person ever to exhibit photographs at the annual Norwegian Exhibition of Art ( the 84th autumn exhibition). The milieu around the NAFAP and the Photogallery was not the only one within the photography environment innvolved in issues related to fine art, but it was this environment that took it upon it self to create a room on the established art scene for photographers who wanted to work with fine art.

In the 70s and 80s the development reaches out for a more pluralistic expression. From documentary photography with focus on political and social relations, landscape and portrait photography was mainly presented in picture magazines such as Aktuell. The artistic photograph now goes over to conquer new arenas such as the Autumn exhibition, and in time Henie- Onstad art senter to mention one. Towards the end of the 1970s photography was mainly black and white. Color photograps belonged to advertising and fashion.. In the artworld colour was practically ”tabu”. The use of colour slowly enters around 1970,and a lot of new colour prosesses, such as Cibacrome/Ilfocrome (1964) og the polaroid film SX-70 (1972) are used.

Only some of the photographs shown in the exhibition is taken from Norsk Museum for Fotografi - Preus Fotomuseums own collection. To make it all come together the museum has borrowed pictuers from the collections of Olav Løkke, Robert Meyer and directly from some photographers.

All togheter there are 60 photographers represented in the exhibition:
